From a comparison of the results with those of preceding years, it appears that a very decided advancement in scholarship and grade has been effected; that the entire system is in excellent condition; and that the immense outlay of money expended upon these schools has been properly and judiciously invested. Having in my last annual report, appended to the report from your Department of February 2, 1863, given a detailed synopsis of the organization and practical working of the system, I have nothing further to add on the present occasion than the expression of my entire confidence that its gradual extension and amplification, with the growth and expansion of this great metropolis, will amply vindicate the wisdom and prescience of those statesmen and patriots who laid its foundation. Rice, Superintendent of Public Instruction: Dear Sir--The undersigned school commissioner for the second district in the county of Niagara, comprising the towns of Cambria, Hartland, Lewiston, Niagara, Newfane, Porter, Somerset and Wilson, respectfully submits the following report: The number of school districts in the above named towns is 108. The number of school-houses is 111, of which number one is log, 56 are frame, 30 are brick, and 24 are stone. Most of them are well built and conveniently arranged inside; but frequently lack play grounds and outbuildings. The number of children of school age is 9,837. The number of pupils that have attended school during the year ending Sept. 30th, 1863, is 7,249, of which number 1,840 have attended less than two months; 2,594 have attended two and less than ...
